I pesi da telaio venivano realizzati con vari materiali, da pietra, argilla cruda, terracotta, bronzo fino all’ ossidiana. I più comuni avevano forma cilindrica come questo e anche se rozzi o non ben rifiniti avevano un foro ad un’estremità per legarvi i fili. Pesavano da qualche decina di grammi a qualche etto, probabilmente in relazione alla dimensione del filo usato o al numero dei fili del mazzetto ad essi attaccato. Questi strumenti venivano usati nell’antichità per lavorare i tessuti con il telaio a pesi, con la caratteristica di cominciare la lavorazione dalla parte alta del tessuto anziché dal basso.
The loom weights were made with various materials, from stone, raw clay, terracotta, bronze to obsidian. The most common were cylindrical in shape like this and even if rough or not well finished they had a hole at one end to tie the threads. They weighed from a few tens of grams to a few pounds, probably in relation to the size of the thread used or the number of threads in the bundle attached to them. These tools were used in ancient times to work fabrics with a weighted loom, with the characteristic of starting the work from the top of the fabric instead of from the bottom.
