Il ferro da stiro a carbone, risalente ai primi anni del XX secolo, era un attrezzo che veniva utilizzato per rimuovere le pieghe al tessuto una volta lavato.
All’interno del ferro veniva alloggiato il carbone ardente, alimentato con ossigeno attraverso i fori circolari posti su entrambi lati grazie all’utilizzo di un soffietto.
L’utilizzo di questo ferro da stiro richiedeva un’ attenzione particolare: il rischio era quello di sporcare gli indumenti di nero con la cenere o di bruciarli con il carbone incandescente. Il ferro da stiro è realizzato completamente in ghisa con un robusto manico di legno che poggia sul coperchio apribile.
The charcoal iron, dating back to the early twentieth century, was a tool that was used to remove folds to the fabric once washed.
Inside the iron was housed the burning coal, fed with oxygen through the circular holes placed on both sides thanks to the use of a bellows. The use of this iron required special attention: the risk was to dirty the clothes black with ashes or to burn them with incandescent coal. The iron is made entirely of cast iron with a sturdy wooden handle that rests on the opening lid.
