Protagonista di questa immagine è Remigio Piva di Giovan Battista, nato a Rovigo il 28 febbraio 1840 da una famiglia benestante. Era studente di un Liceo a Venezia quando nel 1859, come tanti altri studenti veneti, decise di oltrepassare clandestinamente il Po per arruolarsi tra i volontari nel II Corpo dell’Armata Centrale che nel corso delle operazioni militari venne mandato a presidiare le Romagne. Dopo il congedo nel settembre 1859 superò l’esame di maturità presso il Liceo “Sant’Alessandro” di Milano, alla fine di novembre si iscrisse alla facoltà di matematica-ingegneria dell’università di Pavia, entrando in contatto con un ambiente particolarmente attivo e patriottico. Nel 1860 partecipò alla Spedizione dei Mille nella VII Compagnia comandata da Benedetto Cairoli, composta prevalentemente da volontari e studenti universitari pavesi.
Dopo la fine della campagna decise di ritornare a Pavia per concludere gli studi e si laureò in ingegneria. Ma negli anni successivi continuò ad partecipare alle campagne garibaldine. Nel maggio 1862 raggiunge i volontari riuniti a Sarnico e Palazzolo per entrare in Trentino. Nel 1866 fu ancora a fianco del Generale nella terza guerra d’indipendenza e poi nella campagna dell’Agro romano.
Nel 1867 Remigio Piva ritornò in Veneto e nel 1878 risultava ricevitore del R. Lotto. Partecipò alla vita politica e fu consigliere provinciale e assessore e sindaco di Rovigo. Per sua iniziativa il 15 novembre 1896 fu inaugurato a Rovigo il monumento a Giuseppe Garibaldi. Morì 15 settembre 1919.
