Il giogo è un attrezzo in legno, con accessori in metallo e in cuoio, in forma di barra trasversale sagomata (giogo propriamente detto) o di collare (giogo a collare), entrambi applicati al collo degli animali, con differenti concezioni.
Il primo è usato, in genere, per l’applicazione ad una coppia di buoi, il secondo per l’applicazione al cavallo. Esistono fondamentalmente due maniere di aggiogare i buoi, utilizzate in diverse aree geografiche: fissando il giogo immediatamente dietro le corna dell’animale e legandolo alla base di queste, oppure poggiandolo più indietro, sul retro del collo, e fissandolo al corpo con bretelle o con un collare. L’attrezzo permette di scaricare attraverso il tronco dell’animale, la forza di trazione esercitata dalle zampe e trainare un carro o un aratro.
Nella foto sono visibile i due collari di ferro in cui venivano costretti i buoi, connessi alla base di legno sagomata per garantire lo spazio necessario a questi, evitando lo stritolamento e incrementando così l’efficienza produttiva.
The yoke is a wooden tool, with metal and leather accessories, in the form of a shaped crossbar (yoke proper) or collar (collar yoke), both applied to the neck of the animals, with different concepts.
The first is generally used for the application to a pair of oxen, the second for the application to the horse. There are basically two ways of yoking oxen, used in different geographical areas: by fixing the yoke immediately behind the horns of the animal and tying it to the base of these, or by placing it further back, on the back of the neck, and fixing it to the body with braces or with a collar. The tool allows to unload the traction force exerted by the legs through the trunk of the animal and to tow a wagon or a plow.
In the photo you can see the two iron collars in which the oxen were forced, connected to the shaped wooden base to ensure the necessary space for them, avoiding crushing and thus increasing production efficiency.
