Nel Novembre del 1951 si combinarono fatalmente diversi fattori atmosferici, che portarono all’esondazione del Po. Alle 5.30 del mattino del 14 Novembre 1951 si verifica la prima rottura, del torrente Crostolo, in concomitanza alla sua affluenza nel Po. Questa rottura scatenò una serie di eventi a catena che portarono, tra le 19.30 e le 20.30, a tre rotture nell’argine maestro del Po, tutte e tre a Occhiobello, che permisero all’acqua del fiume di esondare ad un ritmo di 6.000 mc/sec.
Si stima che per 2/3 il Po “scorreva” sul Polesine, mentre solo 1/3 proseguiva il suo corso fino al mar Adriatico.
L’evento sommerse il 52% del Polesine, colpì principalmente la provincia di Rovigo, causò 88 vittime umane e più di 180.000 senzatetto; causò danni per 8.200.000.000 lire italiane (circa 4.200.000 Euro).

In November 1951 various atmospheric factors fatally combined, which led to the flooding of the Po. At 5.30 am on November 14, 1951, the first rupture of the Crostolo stream occurs, concomitantly with its affluence in the Po. This rupture triggered a series of chain events that led, between 19.30 and 20.30, to three breakages in the main bank of the Po, all three in Occhiobello, which allowed the river water to overflow at a rate of 6,000 cubic meters / sec. It is estimated that 2/3 of the Po “flowed” on the Polesine, while only 1/3 continued its course as far as the Adriatic Sea.
The event submerged 52% of the Polesine, mainly affected the province of Rovigo, caused 88 human victims and more than 180,000 homeless; caused damage for 8,200,000,000 Italian lire (approximately 4,200,000 euros).

Immediati sono stati gli aiuti dei volontari polesani, e non solo: presto arrivarono aiuti anche dall’esercito, oltre che italiano, Americano. Accorsero anche forze dell’ordine quali Carabinieri e Polizia di stato.
